Se-Won, or Samantha, as she is affectionately referred to by her friends, has been selected from among many qualified candidates by the prestigious UCSD Sailor Research Group to serve as a summer intern. In fact, she is one of only 7 high school students total representing 6 top high schools in San Diego County. This is a tremendous honor as Samantha will work in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, regarded as one of the top five in the nation. This opportunity presented itself through the network created by Mr. Mike Iufer, Head of Science Department at The Rock Academy, and proud alum of UCSD, via the Science Consortium that the TRA presented this spring (KUSI Video).
This internship is designed to expose Samantha to the world of nanotechnology. More specifically, she will be working on 'whiskers' project, which specializes in optical fibers. She will learn how to create computer programs, much like what she did as a member of TRA Robotics Team. Moreover, she will perform a great deal of research and read extensive articles and write papers related to this project. After Samantha completes this internship, she is going to participate in a national science fair.
